A Replit project fails to load AWS credentials when the values are not placed in Replit Secrets or when the code expects the usual AWS credential files (like ~/.aws/credentials), which Replit does not create. Replit only exposes environment variables you explicitly add, so AWS SDK cannot find them unless they exist at runtime.
The AWS SDK looks for AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID and AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY. On Replit these must be added in Secrets; otherwise the variables stay empty. Replit does not persist files like ~/.aws, and variables set in the shell don’t survive restarts. Only Secrets become real env vars during execution.

When a Replit server uploads a file to Amazon S3 and gets AccessDenied, it almost always means the AWS credentials or their permissions don’t match what the upload request is trying to do. S3 URLs fail on Replit because S3 blocks public access by default, uses strict CORS rules, and requires correctly signed links. When your Replit app fetches or embeds S3 files, the browser enforces these rules, so any missing permission, wrong policy, or expired presigned URL results in the file not loading.
Your Replit web preview runs in a browser sandbox. That browser will only load S3 files if the bucket is public or the URL is a valid presigned URL, and the bucket has a CORS policy allowing the request origin (something like https://your-repl-name.repl.co). Many developers try making a bucket “public” to test from Replit, but S3 blocks most public-by-default configs now.
